# NumPy | datetime_data method

NumPy's `datetime_data(~)` method extracts information about the unit as well as the step-size.

WARNING

Due to a lack of explanation in the official documentation, we do not understand what the step-size means.

# Parameters

1. `dtype` | `string` or `type`

The datetime from which to extract information.

# Return value

A tuple that contains the following:

• The unit given as a string

• The steps-size given as an integer

# Examples

To extract the units from an existing `datetime64` object:

``` dt = np.datetime64(np."2020-05-25")np.datetime_data(dt) ('D', 1) ```

Here, the output tells us that our datetime has a unit of days (i.e. `"D"`). Again, we're not too sure what the first unit is about, so if you have any insights, we'd love to talk with you!

To extract the units from an existing `timedelta64` object:

``` td = np.timedelta(20, "s")np.datetime_data(td) ('s', 1) ```
