MySQL's TO_DAYS(~) method returns the number of days since the start of the standard calendar (0000-00-00) from a provided date or datetime.

WARNING

This method should only be used with dates after the start of the Gregorian calendar (1582), as it does not account for lost days when the calendar was switched from Julian calendar.

Parameters

1. date | date|datetime

A date or datetime to convert to days since year 0.

Return value

The number of days since the start of the standard calendar (0000-00-00) for the input date or datetime.

Examples

To return days since year 0 for a datetime:

SELECT TO_DAYS('2020-04-16 09:30:20');
+--------------------------------+
| TO_DAYS('2020-04-16 09:30:20') |
+--------------------------------+
| 737896 |
+--------------------------------+

We now know that '2020-04-16 09:30:20' is equivalent to 737896 days since the start of year 0000-00-00.
