MySQL's SUBTIME(~) method subtracts the specified time interval from a time or datetime value.

Parameters

1. expr1 | time/datetime

The time or datetime to subtract the time interval from.

2. expr2 | time

The time interval to subtract from expr1.

Return value

The result of subtracting the specified time interval from expr1.

Examples

Basic usage

To subtract a time from a datetime:

SELECT SUBTIME('2019-12-31 23:59:59.999999', '1:1:1.000002');
+-------------------------------------------------------+
| SUBTIME('2019-12-31 23:59:59.999999', '1:1:1.000002') |
+-------------------------------------------------------+
| 2019-12-31 22:58:58.999997 |
+-------------------------------------------------------+

To subtract a time from a time:

SELECT SUBTIME('12:30:30.999999', '1:1:1.000002');
+--------------------------------------------+
| SUBTIME('12:30:30.999999', '1:1:1.000002') |
+--------------------------------------------+
| 11:29:29.999997 |
+--------------------------------------------+

Negative time

To subtract negative time (i.e. add a time):

SELECT SUBTIME('12:30:30.999999', '-1:1:1.000002');
+---------------------------------------------+
| SUBTIME('12:30:30.999999', '-1:1:1.000002') |
+---------------------------------------------+
| 13:31:32.000001 |
+---------------------------------------------+

Note that there is a separate method ADDTIME(~) specifically for adding time intervals to a time / datetime.
