The above sample table can be created using the code here.

Basic usage

To return the day of year that current students enrolled:

SELECT fname, DAYOFYEAR(day_enrolled)
FROM students;
+----------+-------------------------+
| fname | DAYOFYEAR(day_enrolled) |
+----------+-------------------------+
| Sky | 337 |
| Ben | 111 |
| Travis | 226 |
| Arthur | 92 |
| Benjamin | 1 |
+----------+-------------------------+

To return students who were enrolled before 200th day of the year:

SELECT fname, DAYOFYEAR(day_enrolled)
FROM students
WHERE DAYOFYEAR(day_enrolled) < 200;
+----------+-------------------------+
| fname | DAYOFYEAR(day_enrolled) |
+----------+-------------------------+
| Ben | 111 |
| Arthur | 92 |
| Benjamin | 1 |
+----------+-------------------------+

To return day of year from a datetime:

SELECT DAYOFYEAR('2020-04-12 06:05:55');
+----------------------------------+
| DAYOFYEAR('2020-04-12-06-05-55') |
+----------------------------------+
| 103 |
+----------------------------------+

We now know that 12 April 2020 was the 103rd day in 2020.
