MySQL's LOWER(~) function converts string inputs to lowercase.

Syntax

SELECT LOWER("string1", "string2", ...);

SELECT LOWER(string_column1, string_column2, ...)
FROM table;

Sample table - Students

student_id

fname

lname

day_enrolled

age

The above sample table can be created using the code here.

Examples

If we wanted to return fname in lowercase:

SELECT LOWER(fname)
FROM students;
+--------------+
LOWER(fname)
+--------------+
sky
ben
travis
arthur
benjamin
+--------------+
5 rows in set (0.00 sec)

We do not necessarily have to select from a table:

SELECT LOWER('HELLO');
+----------------+
LOWER('HELLO')
+----------------+
hello
+----------------+
1 row in set (0.00 sec)
