To change a column type to string, use the Series' astype("string"):

df = pd.DataFrame({"A":[3,5],"B":[4,6]}, index=["a","b"])
df["A"].astype("string")
a 3
b 5
Name: A, dtype: string

Note that astype("str") and astype(str) will result in column type object:

df["A"].astype(str)
a 3
b 5
Name: A, dtype: object

For readability and performance benefits, opt to make the column type string instead of object.
