To count the occurrence of non-overlapping characters in Python's strings, use the count(~) method.

Counting the occurrence of a character in a string

Count the number of times the character "e" occurs in a string:

x = "Awesome"
x.count("e")
2

Counting the occurrence of a substring in a string

Count the number of times the characters "we" appears in a string:

x = "Awesome"
x.count("we")
1

Note that the the count(~) counts non-overlapping substrings:

x = "aaa"
x.count("aa")
1

To count the occurrence of the substring "ab" starting from index 1:

x = "abcd"
x.count("ab", 1)
0
