In Python any object can be tested for truth value (true or false).
Empty sequences and collections such as ''
, ()
, []
, {}
, set()
, range(0)
are considered false.
We can combine this with the boolean operation not x
:
Operation | Return value |
---|---|
| If |
Examples
Empty string
To check whether x
is an empty string:
x = ''not x
True
As x
is an empty string that has truth value false, not x
returns True
.
Not empty string
To check whether y
is an empty string:
y = 'abc'not y
False
As y
is not an empty string, it has truth value true hence not y
returns False
.
