Prerequisites
To follow along with this guide, please make sure to have:
created a service account and downloaded the private key (JSON file) for authentication (please check out my detailed guide)
installed the Python client library for Google Cloud Storage:
pip install --upgrade google-cloud-storage
Getting the size of file in Google Cloud Storage
To get the size of a file called cat.png
in Google Cloud Storage using Python, get the file using the get_blob(~)
method, and then check the blob's size
property:
from google.cloud import storage
# Authenticate ourselves using the private key of our service accountpath_to_private_key = './gcs-project-354207-099ef6796af6.json'client = storage.Client.from_service_account_json(json_credentials_path=path_to_private_key)
bucket = storage.Bucket(client, 'example-bucket-skytowner')blob = bucket.get_blob('cat.png')print(f'{blob.size} bytes or {blob.size/1000} KB')
160546 bytes or 160.546 KB
WARNING
Here, you must use the method bucket.get_blob(~)
instead of bucket.blob(~)
since get_blob(~)
sends a request to GCS to fetch the meta-information of the file (e.g. size
), while blob(~)
does not.
