Beautiful Soup's find_next(~) method returns the first tag that comes after the current tag in the document. This method takes in the exact same parameters as find(~), which we document here in detail.

Examples

Basic usage

Consider the following HTML document:

my_html = """
    <p id="alex">Alex</p>
    <p>Bob</p>
    <p id="cathy">Cathy</p>
"""
soup = BeautifulSoup(my_html, "html.parser")

To find all tags that come after Alex's tag:

p = soup.find(id="alex")
p.find_next()
<p>Bob</p>

To find the next tag with id="cathy" after Alex's tag:

p = soup.find(id="alex")
p.find_next(id="cathy")
<p id="cathy">Cathy</p>

Case when parent is not shared

A common source of confusion is when we have the following HTML document:

my_html = """
   <div>
      <p id="alex">Alex</p>
   </div>
   <p>Bob</p>
"""
soup = BeautifulSoup(my_html, "html.parser")

Here, Bob's tag does not share the same parent as Alex's tag. Calling find_next(~) on Alex's tag yields:

p = soup.find(id="alex")
p.find_next()
<p>Bob</p>

Notice how find_next(~) returns a tag that comes after the current tag in the HTML document.
