expand_more We can permanently rename a column in MySQL using the below syntax:
ALTER TABLE table_name CHANGE old_column_name new_column_name data_type;
Example
Consider the following table containing information about some students:
ID | Name | Age | Hobby |
---|---|---|---|
1 | Alex | 30 | Programming |
2 | Bob | 15 | Programming |
3 | Cathy | 20 | Swimming |
The above table can be created using the code here.
To check the current table characteristics:
DESCRIBE info;

To rename the column name
to first_name
:
ALTER TABLE info CHANGE name first_name VARCHAR(20);

To confirm the column has indeed been renamed:
DESCRIBE info;
