To extract elements by id in Beautiful Soup:

Just as an example, consider the following HTML document:

my_html = """
   <p id="person_one">Alex</p>
   <p id="person_two">Bob</p>
   <p id="person_three">Cathy</p>
"""

soup = BeautifulSoup(my_html)

Find method

To extract the element with an id of "person_two" using the find method:

soup.find_all(id="person_two")
[<p id="person_two">Bob</p>]

Note that typically the ids of the elements are unique, so you might prefer to use soup.find(~) instead:

soup.find(id="person_two")
<p id="person_two">Bob</p>

Select method

To extract the element with an id of "person_two" using the select(~) method:

soup.select("#person_two")
[<p id="person_two">Bob</p>]

A couple of things to note here:

  • make sure to prepend the # character before the id name

  • the returned type is always a list
